Apparently, I Never Really Go on Vacation

I’ve always believed inspiration shows up when you aren’t necessarily looking for it.

Sometimes it’s in an old movie, a phrase that makes me laugh, something tucked away in my memory from the ’80s—or, apparently, while wandering through the streets of London, York and Edinburgh with my husband wondering, Could I turn that into a needle minder?

Welcome to traveling with the owner of Emerald Coast Needlepoint.

Apparently, I Never Really Go on Vacation

This recent trip to the UK was supposed to be a vacation. And it was. But when you own a creative business, your brain doesn’t exactly clock out. I found myself noticing everything. The colors. The architecture. The signs. The tartans. The tiny storefronts. The history. The things that felt quintessentially British or Scottish—and the wonderfully quirky things you just don’t see at home.

Before long, I had a running list of ideas.

A York ghost? Absolutely.

A cheeky spin on the iconic London Underground sign with Mind the Needle? Obviously.

A beautiful whisky bottle inspired by Scotland? How could I not?

Greyfriars Bobby? A tartan heart? A Highland cow? A sheep wrapped in chic tartan wool?

You can see where this is going.

My vacation had officially become a design trip.

York Completely Stole My Creative Heart

There was something about York that felt tailor-made for inspiration. Walking through those old streets—especially around the Shambles—felt like stepping into another world. The crooked buildings, tiny storefronts and centuries of history made me want to capture a little piece of it. I COMPLETELY where why JK Rowling was inspired to create Diagon Alley from the streets of York!

And then there were the famous York ghosts. I loved the idea of taking something so recognizable from the city and turning it into an ECN-style needle minder: simple, polished, a little unexpected and something that instantly reminds you of a place. That is really what I want these travel-inspired pieces to become.

Tiny souvenirs with personality.

Not the souvenir you buy at the airport because you forgot to get something. The one that makes you remember exactly where you were and how the place made you feel. Then came Scotland.

If the Emerald Coast is turquoise water, white sand and sunshine, Scotland felt like an entirely different color palette—and I loved it. Golfing along some of the most famous golf courses, I couldn't help but notice things! Deep blues. Rich greens. Tartan. Stone buildings. Misty landscapes. The whisky bottles drank at the turns on the 9th. Highland cows with entirely too much fabulous hair. There was inspiration everywhere. I especially loved finding ways to take traditional Scottish imagery and make it feel like Emerald Coast Needlepoint.

That’s an important part of the process for me. I’m not interested in simply copying an object and shrinking it down. I want to play with it. Simplify it. Change a color. Add polished gold. Make it a little more chic, a little more fun and sometimes a little more ridiculous.

Because that's the good stuff.

Inspiration Doesn't Always Look Like "Needlepoint"

One thing I’ve learned since starting Emerald Coast Needlepoint is that inspiration rarely begins with needlepoint.

It might be a vintage VHS tape.

A fabulous handbag.

A prescription bottle.

A phrase someone says.

A tile on a Mahjongg table.

A ghost hanging in a shop window in York.

Or a sign in London telling you where you need to go.

The fun is figuring out how to translate that moment into something stitchers will recognize, laugh about, collect, give to a friend—or put on their canvas and think, This is so me. That’s the part of this business I love.

Bringing a Little Bit of the Trip Home

I came home from this trip with photos, memories, probably too many things in my suitcase—and a head full of new designs. Some of those ideas will make it into production. Some will change ten times before I’m happy with them. And a few will probably end up in the “What Was I Thinking?” file. That’s part of the process too. But I love knowing that when one of these new needle minders eventually lands on someone’s canvas, there’s a story behind it.

It started with a street I wandered down.

A shop window that made me stop.

A color combination I couldn't forget.

A place that made me laugh.

Or simply one of those moments when I looked at something and immediately thought:

That needs to be a needle minder.

And apparently, that is how I travel now.
